Grid Congestion or Power Grid Overload
Grid congestion is a major challenge in the Netherlands. The rapid growth of renewable energy sources like solar and wind, along with the increasing demand for electricity, is putting immense pressure on the power grid. According to the Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), more than 50% of the Netherlands is already dealing with grid congestion, leading to delays in connecting solar panels and electric vehicle charging stations.
Proof of Concept for Alliander
This summer, we were selected by Alliander - one of the Netherlands' largest grid operators - to develop a proof of concept in Amsterdam. Our goal is to explore how smartly managed plug-and-play home batteries can alleviate pressure on the power grid at the neighborhood level.
Since our smart plug-and-play home batteries also work without solar panels*, we can now reach renters and apartment dwellers. This flexibility allows us to involve more households in the fight against grid congestion.
*The batteries can be charged from the grid via a standard outlet when electricity prices are low and discharge when prices peak.
Grid Technology
These batteries store excess energy during times of peak production and release it when demand is high, thus reducing the load on the grid. Our plug-in home battery technology is just one piece of a much more complex puzzle. Alliander is also working on rolling out other grid technologies to keep grid congestion under control.
Open Ecosystem Meets Open Source
What makes ModuleOne stand out is its smart management system. In collaboration with OpenRemote, an open-source platform for smart energy applications, we are developing an advanced energy management system that deploys the batteries at the right moment.
This open source system allows us to continuously improve and optimize the technology in partnership with other companies and experts. The open source approach of OpenRemote and the open ecosystem of ModuleOne are truly a match made in... Brussels/Eindhoven.
