Where Should You Install a Plug-In Home Battery?

A plug-in home battery is designed to make energy storage easier. With MyGrid ModuleTwo, no major work in the distribution board is normally required: you connect the battery directly to a suitable earthed wall socket.


However, plug-in does not mean that every room, socket or electrical circuit is suitable. The right location and connection help the battery operate safely and efficiently throughout its lifetime.




The quick answer


Place ModuleTwo in a dry, cool and well-ventilated room with a stable temperature, preferably on the ground floor. A utility room or suitable garage is often a good choice.

Keep the battery away from escape routes, stairs, moisture, direct sunlight, heat sources and combustible materials. Connect it directly to an earthed wall socket without using an extension lead, adapter or power strip.


Seven rules for safe placement


  1. Place the battery on a level, stable and non-combustible surface.

  2. Keep enough free space around it for ventilation and cooling.

  3. Do not place it in a hallway, stairwell, beneath stairs or in another escape route.

  4. Avoid moisture, flooding risk, direct sunlight, radiators, boilers and open flames.

  5. Connect it directly to a suitable earthed wall socket.

  6. Never use an extension lead, travel adapter or power strip.

  7. Install and regularly test a smoke alarm in or close to the room.


These recommendations are consistent with the guidance published by Brandweer Nederland for plug-in home batteries.


Where is the best place for ModuleTwo?


Safe plug-in in battery installation

A ground-floor utility room is usually the strongest choice. It is generally accessible, easy to ventilate and separated from bedrooms and primary escape routes.

A suitable garage can also work well when the temperature remains within the limits stated in the product manual. Protect the battery against water, vehicles, tools and stored objects that could damage or obstruct it.


Good locations usually have:


  • A dry and stable environment

  • A stable room temperature

  • A level, non-combustible surface

  • Sufficient free space around the battery

  • Easy access for the user and emergency services

  • No fuels, paint, cardboard or other easily combustible materials nearby


Avoid placing the battery:


  • In a bedroom, hallway, stairwell or beneath stairs

  • Inside a closed cupboard or underneath furniture

  • In direct sunlight or next to a radiator or boiler

  • Where it can become wet, fall over or be struck by people, vehicles or objects

  • Near flammable or combustible materials

  • Outdoors unless the product manual explicitly permits the location and conditions


Never place cups, plants or stored objects on top of the battery.


Connect the battery safely


The wall socket and electrical circuit are part of the safety system. A home battery may charge and discharge for long periods, so the connection deserves more attention than an ordinary phone charger.


Connect ModuleTwo directly to an earthed wall socket. Do not use an extension lead, adapter or power strip. Prefer a dedicated or lightly loaded circuit and avoid sharing it with high-power appliances such as a washing machine, tumble dryer or electric heater.


Use no more than one home-battery system on the same circuit. If you want to connect multiple systems, ask a qualified electrician to assess the installation and provide suitable separate circuits.


If the wiring, socket or distribution board is old, damaged, undocumented or becomes unusually warm, stop using the connection and have it inspected by a qualified electrician.


It is also good practice to mark the relevant circuit in the distribution board and keep MyGrid's contact details available.


How ModuleTwo protects your home


ModuleTwo combines several local safety layers. These systems work together, but they do not replace correct placement, a suitable socket or a working smoke alarm.


Continuous local monitoring


The Battery Management System continuously monitors cell voltage, electrical current and temperature. If a measurement moves outside the permitted range, the system can automatically reduce power or stop operation.


Anti-islanding protection


If the public grid loses power, ModuleTwo's normal grid-connected output stops supplying electricity to the grid. This anti-islanding function helps protect technicians working on cables that should no longer be live.


The separate 1,200 W backup outlet can continue to power directly connected devices during an outage. Never connect this backup outlet to another wall socket or use it to energise the home's fixed wiring.


Internal fire mitigation


ModuleTwo includes an internal fire-mitigation system as an additional protection layer in the event of an abnormal thermal incident inside the enclosure.


Monitoring through MyGrid's European cloud


Remote monitoring, alerts and diagnostics provide additional visibility. The battery's essential protective functions remain active locally and do not depend on a working internet or cloud connection.


Registration in the Netherlands and Belgium


The Netherlands requires battery systems with a rated power of 0.8 kW or more to be registered. ModuleTwo has a maximum grid output of 800 W and therefore reaches this threshold.


After connecting and commissioning ModuleTwo, register the system through Energieleveren.nl. Registration is free and helps the network operator understand where batteries are connected and how much power they can exchange with the electricity grid.


If several battery systems are used together, their combined power determines whether the registration threshold is reached.


For the registration, you may need:

  • Your address, meter number and contact details

  • The brand and type of the inverter

  • The inverter's rated power

  • The battery system's power and storage capacity

  • The date the system was commissioned


If you add an Expansion Battery, enter the total installed capacity. The maximum AC output of the ModuleTwo system remains 0.8 kW.

What about insurance?


A separate home-battery insurance policy is usually not required. Depending on the insurer and how the battery is positioned, it may fall under the buildings or contents insurance. For example, Centraal Beheer states that home batteries are included as standard in its buildings insurance, but policies and conditions differ between insurers.


We recommend informing your insurer about the location and asking for written confirmation of the applicable coverage and conditions.


You can ask:

“Is this plug-in home battery covered at this address, and do you impose any placement, notification, inspection or smoke-alarm conditions?”

Mention that ModuleTwo is a plug-in lithium iron phosphate home battery with 2.11 kWh of storage capacity and a maximum grid output of 800 W.


Keep the following documents together:


  • Purchase invoice

  • Serial number

  • Product manual

  • EU Declaration of Conformity

  • Relevant grid-approval documentation

  • Registration confirmation

  • Written answer from your insurer

  • Several photos showing the battery and its surroundings


Renters should also check their rental agreement. Apartment residents should ask their building manager, VvE or other co-ownership body whether additional building or evacuation requirements apply.


Check the battery twice a year


ModuleTwo requires little routine maintenance, but a short inspection twice a year is a good habit.


Check:

  • The plug and cable for damage, wear or discolouration

  • The socket for damage or unusual heat

  • The enclosure for dents, swelling or other damage

  • Whether the battery and app operate normally

  • Whether security and firmware updates are available

  • Whether the smoke alarm still works


Contact MyGrid if you notice damage or abnormal behaviour.


Warning signs and emergency action


If the battery becomes unusually hot, swells, hisses, smells burnt, emits smoke or reports a serious fault, do not open or move it.


Leave the area, close the door if this can be done safely and call 112. Tell the emergency operator that a lithium home-battery system is involved.


Frequently asked questions


Do I need an electrician to install ModuleTwo?


Not normally for the act of plugging an approved ModuleTwo into a suitable earthed wall socket. Ask a qualified electrician for help if the wiring is old or damaged, if the circuit is heavily loaded, if you want to change the fixed electrical installation or if you want to connect multiple home-battery systems.


Can I place ModuleTwo in a bedroom?


A ground-floor utility room or suitable garage is normally a better choice. Avoid bedrooms, escape routes and spaces beneath stairs.


Can I place ModuleTwo outdoors?


Yes the ModuleTwo and expansion units have an IP65 rating. This means the unit is completely protected against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction, making it safe and suitable for outdoor installations or unheated garages


What happens if Wi-Fi or the cloud is unavailable?


Immediate protection and Battery Management System functions operate locally. Cloud connectivity adds monitoring, alerts and diagnostics, but it is not the battery's only safety layer.
